Your First Osteopathy Appointment

Your first osteopathy appointment will usually last between 45 and 60 minutes. It includes time for a full consultation, assessment and treatment where appropriate.

Your osteopath will ask about your current symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, previous injuries, health conditions, daily activities and movement patterns. This helps them understand what has brought you in and how the issue is affecting you as an individual.

The appointment may also include a physical assessment, where your osteopath looks at posture, movement and the areas causing concern. Findings will be explained clearly before treatment options are discussed.

Treatment During Your First Appointment

In most cases, patients receive treatment during their first osteopathy appointment. This depends on your assessment, health history and whether treatment is suitable for you on the day.

Treatment may include gentle joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, stretching or other manual techniques. Your osteopath may also offer advice on posture, ergonomics, activity, movement, exercises and self-management.

Occasionally, treatment may be delayed if further information, medical advice or investigation is needed first. Your osteopath will explain why and discuss the most appropriate next step.

What to Wear and Bring

Comfortable clothing is recommended, ideally something that allows you to move easily. Depending on the area being assessed, your osteopath may ask you to remove some outer clothing so they can examine posture and movement properly.

Shorts, leggings or a vest top can be brought if that would make you feel more comfortable. Privacy, dignity and comfort will always be respected.

A patient consent form is usually sent by email or text before the appointment and should be completed before you arrive.

Consent, Comfort and Clear Explanation

Consent is an ongoing part of your appointment. Your osteopath will explain each stage of assessment and treatment before proceeding, with time for questions or concerns.

You are always free to pause, decline or stop any examination or treatment at any point. Treatment should feel clearly explained, appropriate and respectful of your comfort level.

This reflects the wider way AB Osteopathy works: individual patient care, clear communication and support centred on the person in front of us.

If Osteopathy Is Not Suitable

Safety and wellbeing always come first. If your osteopath feels osteopathic treatment is not suitable, they will explain why and may recommend contacting your GP, consultant or another healthcare professional.

In some cases, further investigation or medical testing may be advised before treatment can begin. If another approach would be more appropriate, your osteopath will discuss this clearly with you.

When Medical Advice May Be Needed First

Medical advice should be sought before booking if you are experiencing severe or sudden unexplained pain, chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness or weakness in both legs, sudden dizziness, fainting, difficulty speaking, unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats, recent significant trauma, suspected fracture, rapidly worsening pain, signs of infection or new symptoms after surgery or medical treatment.

If you are unsure whether osteopathy is suitable, a short enquiry can help the team guide you before you book.
